The Environmental Competence Centre is the central point of contact for all questions relating to environment and sustainability within DB Bahnbau Gruppe.

Advisory services
Waste and disposable
- Advice on waste management and disposal processes, as well as the preparation of waste and disposal concepts for sites and construction projects
Environmental topics / regulatory requirements
- Consultancy on environmental matters, particularly legal requirements and conditions, as well as opportunities for improvement, including during the planning phase.
Landscape conservation planning
- Preparation of Landscape Conservation Plans (LBP) for construction projects in compliance with statutory requirements and guidelines, in coordination with the client and the relevant authorities.
Compensation and species protection measures
- Advice on compensation and species protection measures, as well as the development of corresponding concepts within the framework of mitigation requirements for construction projects.
Circular economy and life cycle assessment
- Consultancy on the preparation of life cycle assessments, environmental life cycle analyses in accordance with ISO 14040/44 and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), as well as advisory services on circular economy, resource conservation and digital product passports.
Climate resilience
- Advice on adaptation measures to address the projected impacts of climate change.
Implementation support
Sampling / LAGA PN 98
- Sampling and commissioning of analyses for solid waste in accordance with LAGA PN 98.
Compensation and species protection measures
- Support in implementing compensation and species protection measures within the framework of mitigation requirements for construction projects.
Landfill management
- Responsibility for the organisational and technical management of landfill sites, including budget planning, construction supervision, site monitoring and documentation requirements.
Appointed officers
Environmental construction supervision
- Provision of certified environmental construction supervisors in accordance with DB requirements, including the review of environmental regulations and legislation before and during the construction phase.
Immission control officers
- Provision of immission control officers in accordance with Section 54 of the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG). Support in all relevant environmental and immission control matters, including advice on environmentally friendly processes, and verification of compliance of operational processes and installations with legal requirements.
Waste management officers
- Provision of waste management officers in accordance with Section 59 of the Circular Economy Act (KrWG). Support in legally compliant and efficient waste management, including monitoring of proper recording, storage, recovery and disposal of waste in accordance with all legal requirements.
Environmental audits
- Implementation of internal environmental audits to verify compliance with statutory requirements, internal guidelines and defined objectives.
Training
Environmental training
- Upon request, delivery of training courses in environmental protection, immission control, climate protection, waste and disposal management, and climate resilience.
Our teams
Circular economyThe introduction of a circular economy by 2040 — subject to economic, legal and technological conditions — is embedded within Deutsche Bahn AG’s green transformation strategy. As DB Bahnbau Gruppe, we make a significant contribution to achieving this objective. We have therefore set ourselves the mission of establishing a circular economy for our own products. Based on conducted life cycle assessments, we identify improvement potentials and implement a range of measures to achieve this goal.
LandfillsDeutsche Bahn AG is responsible for landfill sites across Germany that are in closure and aftercare phases. The Environmental Competence Centre carries out all required measures in accordance with Section 43 KrWG and Section 10 of the Landfill Ordinance (DepV). This includes complete organisational and technical management, such as budget planning, construction management, site monitoring and documentation in accordance with HOAI.
Logistics sitesDeutsche Bahn AG operates approximately 700 logistics sites across Germany to support the supply and disposal requirements of its construction activities. Some of these sites are supervised by us in our role as waste and immission control officers, performing control, information, advisory and reporting functions. In addition, we support the planning of new permits — generally in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG).
