For a sustainable approach to landfills

Article: For a sustainable approach to landfills

DB AG manages its own landfills throughout Germany during the closure phase. Closure is handled based on two-stage landfill closure programme, which is divided further into steps. The most important steps are final design and planning for permit application, construction drawings, construction and follow-up.

These landfills generally contain locomotive axles, track ballast, building rubble and other typical railway waste. Most of them ceased operation by the mid-1990s.

Mineral waste with the waste classification codes 170504, 170107, 170508, 170101 and other similar categories is accepted.

The Environment and Resource Protection Department performs the following tasks: Landfill closure in accordance with Section 43 of the German Waste Management Act (KrWG) and Section 10 of the Landfill Ordinance (DepV), which covers the entire closure process including budget planning, construction site supervision and documentation in accordance with HOAI.
